Yola flood: Fintiri confirms 23 deaths, vows govt support as rescue efforts continue
Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has confirmed the death of 23 persons following the devastating flood that swept through parts of Yola on Sunday.
The disaster, triggered by a torrential downpour that began around 1:00 a.m., also left widespread destruction in its wake, damaging homes and property worth millions of naira.

Returning to the state on Monday, Governor Fintiri led a high-level delegation to inspect affected communities and offer condolences to victims.
At the temporary displacement camp established at Aliyu Mustafa College, the governor met with displaced families, expressed his grief, and reassured them of the government’s commitment to being succor and aid recovery.
Describing the incident as “tragic and devastating,” Fintiri sympathized with bereaved families and those who lost properties.
He announced that the state government would immediately set up a technical committee in collaboration with the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to assess the full scale of the disaster.
“We will constitute a technical committee to carry out a thorough assessment. Based on their findings, we will take concrete steps to assist affected residents,” Fintiri assured.
While addressing the crowd at the camp, the Governor also criticized individuals using the tragedy to spread misinformation and incite political tension.
“This is not a time for politics or finger-pointing. It’s a time for unity and action,” he warned.
Governor Fintiri attributed the flooding to a combination of intense rainfall and blocked water channels that prevented proper drainage of stormwater into the river, noting that such structural deficiencies must be addressed moving forward.
The Governor was accompanied on the inspection tour by Deputy Governor Professor Kaletapwa Farauta, Speaker Bathiya Wesley, Secretary to the State Government Awwal Tukur, and other top state officials.
Search and rescue operations remain ongoing as emergency response teams continue to comb through submerged areas, searching for survivors and helping displaced residents.
