IWD: NBA Women Forum Visits Adamawa CJ, Petitions Judges for Sexual Harassment

In commemoration of the International Women’s Day, the Nigerian Bar Association Women Forum (NBAWF) in Adamawa State, has paid a courtesy call on the Chief Judge of the state, Hon. Justice Hafsat Abdurrahman yesterday.

The Forum’s State lead, Barr. Fatima Bello Raji who led the team, told the CJ that the purpose of the visit was to intimate her of the activities of the Forum which started in 2022 noting that so far, the Forum has delivered a paper at the last Law Week held by the NBA Yola in December 2023 on the topic: NBA Women Forum: The journey so far, prospects and challenges.

Raji used the occasion to commend the Hon. Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Adamawa State, for sponsoring 14 lawyers to attend the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Conference of the NBA Women Forum’s National Conference held at Lagos, Abuja and Lagos respectively.

The Forum also forwarded a petition of sexual harassment by some judges and court officials. The Forum requested the Chief Judge to create a unit or committee to investigate these charges and punish those involved and engage in training of all judicial staff on Sexual Exploitation and Abuse Policy and Laws.

The Forum invited the Chief Judge as the mother of the Bar and Bench to join the NBA Forum to mentor young and aspiring female lawyers in the profession.

The Honourable Chief Judge, Justice Hafsat Abdulrahman along with her team, the Chief Registrar, Deputy Chief Registrar Litigation and Secretary of the JSC welcomed the NBAWF and expressed delight that women are making tremendous impact in every profession. The Chief Judge noted the impact made by women judges in the country expressing optimism that the Forum can do better in supporting one another.

The CJ encouraged the Forum members to work harder as the legal profession demands a high sense of discipline, hard work and decorum.

She assured the Forum of her continued support and pledged zero tolerance to sexual harassment, exploitation, and abuse just as she vowed to ensure full investigation into the alleged sexual harassment against some judges as the case has been officially brought to her office.

In support of the NBA Women Forum, the PRO of NBA Yola Branch, Mr Promise Rini-Ose Ajumebor was in attendance and pledged the support of the Yola Bar to the growth of the Forum.
