A statement by Lt. Adebayo S. Adewumi, acting assistant director army public relations headquarters 23 Brigade, Yola made available to this newspaper stated that contrary to that misinformation the troops actually acted professionally as the incident unfolded.
“The attention of the Headquarters of 23 Brigade Nigerian Army in Yola has been drawn to a viral misinformation circulating in the media, alleging that troops deployed in Mubi South LGA, Adamawa State, were responsible for the fatal shooting of a motorcyclist, Samaila Hamidu, on 31 August 2024.
“The report, attributed to the Honorable Member representing Mubi South LGA at the State House of Assembly, claims that the troops opened fire on Mr. Hamidu while he was transporting fuel on his motorcycle in Nasarawo Ward of the LGA. While we commend the honorable member for his concern for the welfare of his constituents, we must categorically refute these claims and provide clear and truthful information on the incident.
“Contrary to the misinformation being spread, and in the interest of setting the record straight, the troops deployed at Sebore Nasarawo Ward, Mubi South LGA, were conducting routine patrol aimed at deterring criminal activities in the area. Upon sighting the troops, the victim, unfortunately, fled and subsequently involved in accident as his motorcycle veered into a ditch nearby.
“Demonstrating their professionalism and respect for human life, the troops immediately rendered assistance by rushing the victim to Mubi General Hospital and notifying the Policemen stationed at Nasarawo Ward. Despite all efforts to save his life, the victim died at the hospital. It is important to note that eyewitnesses at the scene praised the troops for their selfless service and prompt response on that fateful day.
“It is, therefore, disheartening to read the misleading report, which unjustly condemns the actions of our gallant troops who remain dedicated to ensuring the peace and security that the Mubi General Area has enjoyed over the years.
“In light of this, we urge the public to disregard the baseless claims and falsehoods being circulated. We remain steadfast in our commitment to maintaining peace, order, and the safety of all citizens in Adamawa State. Furthermore, we reaffirm our unwavering dedication to protecting the lives and livelihoods of all Adamawa State residents,” the statement said.
